Career Overview: Preamble

Vaal Skills Training Institute ‘School of Health Studies’ was founded as a Health and Science Institution situated in Durban city centre. With an intention to provide and promote education in Health Sector to disadvantaged communities.
With an aim to initiate, develop and uplift life skills in local and rural communities affected by non-existence of a Government Health skills initiative to improve by empowering the communities with the health skills through educating them.

Vaal Skills Training Institute endeavours to provide Education to the Social Auxiliary Workers to equip them with the required skills to empower the communities alleviate their Heath by preventive measures so that some of the health problems are avoided. Vaal Skills School achieves this by providing relevant learning programmes to the learners.

To contribute to the much-needed Social Auxiliary workers in South Africa to help the communities get health skills that will reduce some avoidable health problems what will help the country reduce the Cost of providing Health services and achieve high expectations of global health targets.

This qualification is made up of the following compulsory Knowledge and Practical Skill Modules:

Health Promotion Officer is a profession that bridges the gap between communities and health institutions (Clinics, rehabilitation centres, testing and counselling centres etc) as such they form greater part of primary health care re-engineering teams which is currently being rolled out by Department of Health throughout South Africa.

Practical Skill Modules:

  • 2. Support the processes to intervene with individuals and families, at NQF Level 5, 4 Credits.

Work Experience Modules:

  • 1. Exposure to the client counselling and referral processes, at NQF Level 5, 10 Credits.
  • 2. Exposure to the facilitation of non-therapeutic group processes, at NQF Level 5, 14 Credits.
  • 3. Exposure to community development processes, at NQF Level 5, 12 Credits.
  • 4. Exposure to the social work administration processes, at NQF Level 4, 10 Credits.
  • Total number of credits for Work Experience Modules: 46.

ASSESSMENT

Learners are formatively assessed on the basis of assignments, an individual and group project and as well as short test. Assignments, case studies, problem-solving techniques will assist with formative assessment. Learners will also be formatively assessed in real work environment on the basis of observation in natural setting; unobtrusive or planned. Behaviour and performance will be evaluated.
Upon completion of the training learners will be issued with a statement of results by the college which will allow them to sit for national examination.

NB: National examinations are written in June and October/November every year.
CERTIFICATION Learners who pass National Examination will be awarded Occupational Qualification Certificate: Social Auxiliary Worker NQF 5 by (QCTO).
A qualified learner will be able to: • Provide basic counselling and support services to individuals and families with socio-economic challenges
• Facilitate non-therapeutic (educational and support groups) groups towards the accomplishments of the developmental goals of the group
• Facilitate participatory development in communities to address their common socio-economic needs and to promote social justice
• Collect and collate data to inform social services intervention

Learners are attached not limited to the following organisations Clinics, Rehabilitation centres, Testing and Counselling centres, cancer foundation, Hospices, Mental health centres, old age homes, Local municipalities, water purification plants, Health research centres, Primary and Secondary schools, NGOs etc
